SPOTLIGHT: GREEN COFFEE

Wow – the last few months have been a wild ride. Alongside the unprecedented C-Price, we now have ‘Liberation Day Tariffs’ to navigate, which will have multiple impacts. It would be foolish to try and predict what the next few days, weeks or months will bring, as this is a constantly evolving situation. A good starting point for information is this great article in the daily coffee news Here Are the New US Tariffs on Major Coffee Producing and Exporting Countries Daily Coffee News by Roast Magazine which gives a high level overview on the tariff situation and the impact to coffee. Most interesting is the overview of tariffs by coffee producing countries.

There are many different scenarios that the tariffs could have in the coffee world, all of which have pros and cons depending on where you live. One likely scenario for the time being is that American green bean importers will favour origin countries with lower tariffs (due to already mounting cost pressures around the C-Price). Boiling this down, it will undoubtedly mean less cost effective choice within the USA for some coffee producing origins. However, for those that live outside of the USA, beans from high tariff origins will be more abundantly available elsewhere in the world, and at potentially better prices than we have seen in recent months.

Here are a few tips from us around your green bean selection and purchasing:

  • C-price increases haven’t fully hit the price of green coffee available yet (as most importers have a supply at lower rates and are gradually bringing the price increase through). So now is potentially a good time to stock up before the full force of C-Price and the Tariff double whammy hit!
  • Build a relationship with your green bean supplier (this maybe the importer, reseller or your local roastery). By doing this, they can guide you in your decision making, ensuring you are getting the best value for your intended use. You can often try smaller samples before you buy bulk, and get invaluable insider tips from those with the most in-depth knowledge.
  • Green beans stay fresh for long periods, so smaller home roasters get the benefits of economies of scale by buying larger quantities up front. Be considered about your coffee consumption and plan ahead. There are many great articles about how to store your green coffee. For home users, keep it simple and check this article out from Perfect Daily Grind.
  • Join mailing lists and do your own research. You will become familiar with origins, harvest cycles, supply issues in particular regions, and by holding this knowledge, you can make informed decisions on when and what to buy.

For commercial operators – now is the time to invest in a sample roaster (see Opal Blog on Sample roasting here). The Nano is perfect for this!

BUY NZ MADE VISIT

We had the wonderful team from Buy NZ Made tour our Dunedin NZ factory during the month. Check out the video here. The Kaffelogic journey started 10 years ago when our co- founder Chris Hilder began his ‘pursuit of the perfect coffee’. He has spent years developing the firmware and software that makes the Nano ‘do its thing’. Check out this video about Chris talking about the software about the nano. We are so fortunate to have a team full of highly qualified and talented individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes. You can now check out the faces behind the machine on our website.

As the Kaffelogic Nano is proudly designed and made in NZ, tariffs have not largely impacted our global trading status, and therefore we don’t anticipate any major price variances in the near future.
